In Portugal, the four breeds of indigenous chickens, Pedrês Portuguesa, Preta Lusitanica, Yellow and White, are on the verge of extinction, which is why their conservation becomes urgent. Commercial poultry production for meat and eggs exclusively uses selected hybrid strains for maximum productivity. However, Portuguese chicken breeds, despite being naturally less productive, are more robust, less prone to disease, and are better adapted to local environmental and territorial conditions. With this course, the aim is to train the general public in raising these unique breeds of chickens, which are important for preserving biodiversity, maintaining cultural heritage and promoting sustainable agriculture. The course will be led by a multidisciplinary team focused on the mission of ensuring the successful conservation of these endangered breeds.

Goals

Understand the unique characteristics of different indigenous chicken breeds and how to apply best practices in their husbandry, including feeding, housing and disease prevention.

Understand and articulate the importance of maintaining the genetic heritage of native chicken breeds.

Develop effective strategies for promoting native chickens and their food products.
