Summer School in Field Ecology: Learning Scientific Process: Form Problem Definition to Paper Publication (SSFE 2025) is a scientific course dedicated to graduate (Master and Ph.D.) students. Students will participate in a real scientific project and advised by experienced researchers. Participants will have a great opportunity to master their research skills, including scientific project design, sampling, data analyses and critical thinking.

Objetivos

  • Use critical thinking to solve scientific problems
  • Learn study design and sampling methods
  • Gain knowledge in fluvial ecosystems functioning
  • Develop skills in data analyses in R
  • Gain soft skills in scientific communication and collaboration in team in a multidisciplinary and international environment

 

  • Conteúdo

    20 july: Welcome dinner in downtown Kraków


    21 - 24 july: Field works in the Czarny Dunajec River valley


    25 july: First day on the UJ campus in Kraków. You will learn selected statistical methods in R. The following topics will be covered:

    • Exploratory vs. confirmatory data analysis
    • Diversity and homogenization
    • Comparison of species composition
    • Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis
    • Recruitment Box Model

    26 july: Data analysis - you will work on a dataset sampled in the field using methods learned a day before


    27 july: Data analysis, presentation & synthesis - once all analyses are completed, students present their results, followed by a discussion and synthesis.

Requisitos

  • Students enrolled in MSc or PhD in any school of faculty of ULisboa
  • Basic R knowledge
  • Background in ecology
  • English knowledge
  • Motivation and availability to develop outdoor physical work
